According to the ECR coordinator on foreign policy Charles Tannock, the negotiations with Croatia might be concluded in 2010 providing that Croatia shows effort in reforming the judiciary, combating corruption and organised crime and fully cooperating with the ICTY.
On the other hand, a progress report supported by the ECR states that only limited progress on political reforms was made in Turkey. The ECR members criticise above all the power of the military and the absence of a legal framework warranting freedom of expression and religion as well as relations of Turkey with its neighbours. Charles Tannock calls for a substantive reform of the constitution which would place the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms at the core of the state.
The ECR welcomes the achievements of the FYROM in fighting corruption and the functioning of public administration.
