Proposals to extend the EU's Working Time Directive to self-employed drivers were rejected last September in the employment committee, thanks to the votes of ECR members (the vote was 25-24). Now the socialists in the transport committee are trying to push through the plans there as the committee adopts its 'opinion'. ECR transport coordinator Roberts Zīle and Peter Van Dalen will oppose the extension of the directive to self-employed mobile workers. They already comply with significant amounts of safety legislation and the European Commission has accepted that the plans would bring negligible tangible benefits for significant additional burdens.
