The parliament will adopt the report on the commission's Green Paper on the long-awaited reform of the Common Fisheries Policy. The report will contribute to a broad public consultation - the findings of which are to be summed up in March this year.
ECR fisheries coordinator Marek Gróbarczyk and committee vice-chairman Struan Stevenson have tabled numerous amendments to this report on behalf of the ECR Group in an effort to ensure that decisions regarding fish stocks can be made locally rather than in the ivory towers in Brussels.
Furthermore, the discarding of fish represents an unsustainable fishing practice that should be replaced as quickly as possible by a land-all policy. The commission should carefully examine the possibility of adopting new fisheries management models to replace the traditional system of total allowable catches (TACs) and quota system, except where that system may continue to be appropriate, for example in mixed fisheries.
