Tomasz Poręba's questions to Commissioner designate Stefan Fule

Brussels, 12 January 2010

Brussels, 12 January 2010 -- The Association Agreement with Ukraine is a key factor in the development of the EU's relations with Kyiv. Negotiations were to be finalized by the end of last year; however, issues dealing with trade are taking longer than expected. In 2008, Ukraine became a member of the WTO and is currently negotiating with the EU the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area that is a vital component of the new Association Agreement. It is essential to keep in mind that accelerating our economic integration and intensifying our trade relations w Ukraine is in our common interest.

In what way do you intend to implement a deep and constructive dialogue with Ukraine, especially in those areas, which will bring Ukraine closer to the European Union?

Do you believe that the EU should give Ukraine a clear membership perspective and, as commissioner for enlargement, what concrete policies will you pursue to bring Ukraine closer to membership in the EU?
