With Christmas approaching, MEPs will be interested in a European Commission statement on toy safety, particularly after a study was published in Germany which showed that some toys may contain 'CMR compounds' which can be carcinogenic or mutagenic. There is concern that the recent Toy Safety Directive does not sufficiently protect against exposure of children to CMR compounds. ECR chairman of the parliament's consumer protection committee, Malcolm Harbour, was a strong supporter of the Toy Safety Directive and he will support calls to tighten it if it reduces the risk or exposure to children.
