The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group warmly congratulates María Corina Machado, leader of the democratic opposition in Venezuela and winner of the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought of the European Parliament, on being awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
The ECR Group had the honour of proposing María Corina Machado’s candidacy, together with President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia, for the 2024 Sakharov Prize in recognition of her unwavering commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Venezuela.
ECR Co-Chairman Nicola Procaccini said:
“María Corina Machado has shown extraordinary courage in standing up to dictatorship. Her voice speaks for millions of Venezuelans who simply want to live in freedom and dignity. This Nobel Prize is a well-deserved recognition of their struggle.”
ECR Co-Chairman Patryk Jaki added:
“By standing firm against Maduro’s regime, María Corina Machado has given hope to an entire nation. This Nobel Prize recognises not only her personal bravery, but the determination of Venezuelans to reclaim their freedom.”
ECR MEP and Vice-Chair of the Euro-Latin Parliamentary Assembly Carlo Fidanza said:
“María Corina Machado’s fight is a testament to her courage and to the resilience of the Venezuelan people. She remains a beacon of hope and freedom and she continues to inspire all those who defend democracy and human dignity.”
